Well, Christy and I went to another picnic with the Michigan Open Carry group, this time in Lapeer. Most everyone is from OCDO (opencarry.org). The best thing about the picnic? Not much happened, just like I like it. We played some horseshoes, threw a football around, and grilled hot dogs and hamburgers. The only issue of the day was a misunderstanding about the pavilion we were in at first. Apparently it was reserved by a church group, but we had no way of knowing. The group was very cool about the situation, and one of them even admitted to being a CPL holder :

“A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”
The Supreme Court’s 5-4 ruling in District of Columbia v. Heller is a huge step in the right direction. On the surface, this ruling struck down the DC ban on handguns and self-defense in the home. The court had not conclusively interpreted the Second Amendment since its ratification in 1791. Today it ruled that the Second Amendment assures the right of an individual to keep and bear arms.

An editorial, published yesterday in the Flint Journal, in response to this article, seems to be out of touch with reality. In a city third on the list for violent crime, you would think people in Flint would understand the desire law abiding citizens have for carrying guns. This does not seem to be the case for the Journal.
The author actually suggests that those who carry guns “should feel some sensitivity for other park users who do not share their enthusiasm for handguns.” Those who do not agree are just as obligated, if not moreso, to respect the right of gun owners to carry a handgun. If the author feels this way, then he must have the same feelings for other topics. This is no different than somebody seeing a gay couple holding hands or kissing and being offended. Should the gay couple feel sensitivity for those who disagree? It’s idiotic to think so.

Today I attended my first get-together with the guys from OpenCarry.org. After some issues with our original plans, we met at Kelly Park in Burton. By the end, about 15 or so members showed up with their guns on their hips. The park wasn’t too busy, but there were some families fishing, and a few people even stopped to get some information.

The Flint Journal has already posted an article about the meeting. She may have worded some things differently than I would, but any publicity is good publicity… right? Here’s the article:

I’ve been meaning to post this since Thursday night, but I’ve been extremely busy with, well, everything else.
My buddy and I went out to the club to shoot pistols like we usually do every week. Everything was going fine. We had finished all of our tactical drills (drawing, reloading, low light, etc…), and were just wrapping up with the last few mags of ammo when something very weird happened.

I was really hoping to keep up on this blog more than I have been. Anyway, I’ve been spending my time trying to get an interview for a part-time job and practicing defensive pistol tactics at home
One of the best things a human can do is learn how to properly, effectively, and, most importantly, safely handle a firearm.
Since there is always room for improvement, I am constantly looking for something to work on (not that it’s hard for me to find something). Recently, I’ve been concerned with my speed reloading technique. I always seem to do something to screw it up. Anyway, while looking around the web for some tips, I found NUKE1.net. He has a few videos that may be useful to somebody. While there may be more professional training videos out there, I found this one helpful. He has the exact rig I use, except I have the Springfield Armory XD chambered in .40 S&W rather than .45 ACP.
I’ve been practicing this technique, and I’m already way faster and much more consistent.

Just a few pictures from a night at the Midland County Sportsman’s Club. I’m shooting a Springfield XD-40 service model (4 inch) in all photos, except the last, where I’m shooting two XD-40s.
Click on the photo to view the full-size image.
Check out that flying brass!

The slide is still reciprocating in this one.

Firearm safety is the number one thing to consider when purchasing a personal firearm. A complete understanding of the four basic Conditions of Carry will help compliment common sense and attention to detail. These conditions can be applied to all firearms and vary based on the type of firearm you are dealing with. I will stay on the topic of handguns.

Owning a firearm comes with an enormous amount of responsibility and obligation. An obligation to society, your children, your family, and even yourself. An obligation to handle the firearm in a safe and responsible manner at all times. This is especially important with the extremely biased, negative media coverage. Studies show that most firearm accidents are caused by human error, often called an “accidental discharge”, but in reality should be labeled as negligent discharge.
